Il "popolo di Seattle"

Di seguito una delle mails che mi arrivano dall'università. Perché il popolo di Seattle è realtà!

PERSONAL SAFETY ADVICE IN REGARDS TO ANIMAL ACTIVISTIS:

AT YOUR WORK PLACE:

• Keep offices and laboratories locked, especially when empty and after hours.
• Everyone entering an animal facility must have their picture ID on their person and their personal proximity card to gain entry. Do not loan or borrow cards.
• Animals being transported through public spaces must in covered, secured cages.
• Take least public routes in and out of buildings, and only if you are able to in a safe fashion.
• Back up computer data and store it in a safe place.
• Be aware of those expressing unusual interest in your work.
• Do not let people into the animal facilities behind you as you enter – ask others if you can help them. If they don’t have their own proxy access, they must not enter; refer them to the facility supervisor or Program Director.
• If you find things missing or out of place in your lab or office, call the campus police immediately.
• Questions from unidentified persons about the use of animals should be referred to the Program Director or the Office of Animal Welfare.
• Calls received about your work from unidentified or hostile persons, whether at home or at the office, should be reported to campus police.

DEMONSTRATIONS:
Activists like to stage demonstrations when they have the best chance of intimidating workers who are arriving at or leaving work.
They may try to film those entering or leaving the premises. Often there is no film in the camera or video.

• Do not engage in any conversation or argue with the demonstrators
• Keep you car doors and windows locked and closed if driving past demonstrators
• Concentrate on your driving at all times; do not drive fast in an attempt to avoid a confrontation
• Take off name tags or lab coats with name if passing by a group of demonstrators

Animal Activists want to stop animal research. They will try to disrupt research using a variety of tactics designed to frighten employees, lower morale and eventually drive people out of the field. They often use tactics that involve intimidation, harassment, property damage and physical attack. They need you to react to their intimidation to be successful, therefore:

• NEVER ENGAGE AN ACTIVIST, VERBALLY OR PHYSICALLY
• DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ARGUE YOU SIDE
• DO NOT TRY TO CONVERSE
• DO NOT GET WITHIN PHYSICAL STRIKING DISTANCE
• DO NOT MAKE EYE CONTACT

Remember, activists need you to react to their intimidation to be successful
